After gloomy Thursday, tropical days follow: chance of 35 degrees and heat wave

The gloomy weather on Thursday might make it hard to imagine, but temperatures will rise significantly in the coming days. It will be especially warm after the weekend. It could then reach 35 degrees Celsius. There is a local chance of a heatwave.

It’s not cold on Thursday, but it is raining in many parts of the country, says Johnny Willemsen of Weerplaza to NU.nl. The temperatures are between 20 and 24 degrees Celsius. It will clear up towards the evening. On Friday, the temperature will be about the same and the sun and clouds will alternate.

From Saturday, it will be increasingly sunny in the country. It will then be between 21 degrees Celsius in the coastal provinces and 29 degrees Celsius in the east of Noord-Brabant and in Limburg. Willemsen warns of the high sun strength on Friday and Saturday. “It is not yet mega warm, but the UV index is 7 or 8. So apply sunscreen well.”

The UV index indicates how powerful the ultraviolet radiation is in the sunlight that reaches the earth. The higher the sun strength, the greater the chance that you will burn. UV index 8 is the highest achievable in the Netherlands, says Willemsen.

On Sunday it can already be locally tropical warm with a maximum of 31 degrees Celsius, especially in the southeast of the country. We speak of tropical temperatures when the mercury rises above 30 degrees Celsius. In the northwest it is still slightly cooler with a maximum of 26 degrees Celsius.

Tropical Warmth After the Weekend

Only after the weekend will it be tropical warm everywhere in the Netherlands. Throughout the country, temperatures will rise to 33 degrees Celsius on Monday. It is also warm on the Wadden Islands, with 27 or 28 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, there is little wind.

Tuesday is expected to be the warmest day. Then it can be 35 degrees Celsius inland. But Weerplaza places a caveat here: due to the chance of thunderstorms, it may be slightly cooler.

From Wednesday it will be cooler again in the Netherlands, says Willemsen. “It is still warm during the day, between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius, but the chance of thunderstorms increases during the day. Then the heat is driven away.” We also have to deal with a less warm wind from the sea, especially in the coastal provinces.

Chance of Local Heatwave

In the southeastern part of the country there is a chance of a heatwave, says Willemsen. For a heatwave, five summer days warmer than 25 degrees Celsius are needed, of which three are warmer than 30 degrees Celsius. At the earliest, this could be the case on Tuesday. “But then it has to be warmer than 30 degrees Celsius on Sunday.”

Also, from Sunday it cools down less in the nights. Then the temperature remains around 20 degrees Celsius. If the temperature remains above 20 degrees Celsius, there is a tropical night.
