Piet Kamerman passed away at the age of 99. The actor, director, and playwright died on June 3rd in Utrecht, his family announced on Monday. The cremation took place last Friday.
Kamerman became widely known as the bartender Lowietje in the popular police series Baantjer. He played that role between 2000 and 2006. His acting career spanned decades, with work in theater, television, and as a writer and director.
Kamerman was born in Eindhoven and moved to Ireland in the late 1960s, but remained active in the Dutch theater and television world. He starred in series such as De Stille Kracht and De Verlossing, in which he played the role of the one-eyed pastor Kips. He also played Krapp in Krapps Last Tape, one of his most famous stage roles, with Toneelgroep Studio.
In 2020, the documentary Het Late Leven about Kamerman premiered at the Dutch Film Festival. Directors Jaap van den Beukel and Pascale Korteweg followed him in his daily life as he grew older. “You just feel younger than you are,” Kamerman said at the time in an interview with the Eindhovens Dagblad.
