FC Twente lost hard on Wednesday in a practice match against the German Paderborn. With the return of Mees Hilgers and Sam Lammers, they lost no less than 7-0 to the number four of the 2.Bundesliga.
FC Twente entered the Paderborn training complex with a strong team. The most striking names were those of Lammers and Hilgers. Lammers made his return after an injury, Hilgers was banned from the selection because he does not want to extend his expiring contract. John van den Brom did miss internationals Kristian Hlynsson and Mats Rots, among others.
At halftime, FC Twente was already 3-0 behind. In the second half, FC Twente seemed to have more control, but they still conceded four goals in the last half hour. Stefano Marino and Marco Wörner were both important for Paderborn with two goals.
It was the first defeat for Van den Brom as coach of FC Twente. He succeeds Joseph Oosting, who was dismissed at the beginning of September. Since Van den Brom’s appointment, Sparta Rotterdam (1-5), Fortuna Sittard (3-2) and Heracles Almelo (2-1) have won in the Eredivisie.
Van den Brom was therefore surprised by the performance of his team, which rose to seventh place in the Eredivisie. “This is very ugly. I have not seen any of the good play of the past few weeks. In practice matches you always look at the way of playing and that was severely below par today,” said Van den Brom at Tubantia.
Other bad news was the retirement of Max Bruns. The defender has suffered a calf injury. The question is therefore whether he will be available for the match against NEC next Saturday.
