“The Maga gang tries desperately to paint this boy, who Charlie Kirk killed, as someone who does not belong to the group and does everything to score political points with it,” said Kimmel.

After those comments, the American regulator FCC put public pressure on ABC, which Kimmel broadcasts. The channel decided to pull the plug out of the program for the time being after large media companies Sinclair and Nexstar had refused to broadcast the show.

Suspension of the show Disney was confronted with a lot of criticism

The decision of ABC and with that Disney to suspend the show, the channel was placed on a lot of criticism and many questions were questioned. There are concerns about the business interests that may have played a role in the decision. The Nextar company is responsible for dozens of ABC channels and wanted permission from the US government to buy new channels.

The FCC determines, just like the Dutch ACM or a media company, something like that is allowed to do. Companies do not want to be in a bad light with US President Donald Trump. Something similar seemed to play earlier at The Late Show by Stephen Colbert, who will disappear from the tube from June 2026. Paramount, the company behind channel CBS, wanted to merge with Skydance and also needed permission for this.

Paramount has denied that the business interests played a role in stopping Colbert’s show. Also at the Kimmel show, Disney says that it was purely Kimmel’s comments about Kirk.
