Sydney McLaughlin is happy that with her world title in the 400 meters in a miracle time she proved that her switch was the right choice. The American became the fastest woman on this distance in forty years in Tokyo on Thursday.
“I read a few things online,” said McLaughlin half an hour after the historic final in the Japan National Stadium. “Many people had doubts about my switch. That is allowed, that is part of sport. I wanted to show that it was a good choice. I kept faith in myself. I kept working hard and praying. And this is the result.”
The 26-year-old McLaughlin is the reigning Olympic champion and world record holder in the 400 meter hurdles. In that section she was always faster than Femke Bol. She could have stayed at the top for years at the 400 meters hurdles, but this year opted for the challenge of the 400 meters.
McLaughlin is now also at the top on those 400 meters. The only woman who ever ran faster is Marita Koch on behalf of East Germany in 1985 (47.60). There is a hint of doping around that record.
Extra special is that the Dominican Marileidy Paulino took silver in the final in Tokyo in 47.98, the third time ever. “This was a beautiful race for the entire athletics,” said McLaughlin.
McLaughlin also ran a particularly fast time in the semi -finals in Tokyo. She crossed the finish line in 48.29, while holding on to the last part. And that gave confidence.
“After that semi -final I knew there was more in the tank,” said McLaughlin. “But I also knew it would be a tough fight. In the last part of the final I felt that Marileidy was close by. I kept going.”
Once or over the finish there was disbelief at McLaughlin about her time and that of Paulino. “All the work I have done in recent months fell together in this race. I knew I was good, but did not expect that things would go so fast.”
The advantage of the switch from McLaughlin to 400 meters is that she is no longer a competitor of Bol in the 400 meters hurdles. The Dutch is the towering favorite for the world title in the Hordenfinal, which is on the program on Friday.
