Minister Keijzer wants Ukrainian men to arrange shelter in full shelter themselves

These Ukrainians must be provide for their own Housing, Says Keijzer in response to the Red Cross’s Cry for Help. The Ukrainian Embassy Will Share That Call.

The Ministry May not Force These People to Leave the Shelter. Ukrainians are entitled to shelter in the Netherlands based on a European Agreement.

Measure is not a Solution Accordance to Municipalities and the Red Cross

The Red Cross Calls It “An Impossible Task To Place This Responsibility on People Themselves”. “It is up to the government to come up with workable solutions,” Says Suzanne Segaar of the Red Cross. “Think of More Reception Locations and Centrally Mapping People who come to the Netherlands.”

A Spokesperson for the Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG) also Says That This Measure is not a solution. Because the ukrainians who were already asked to arrange their own place could simply refuse. The People who are now bee asked extra are still allowed to do that.

The VNG Wants It To Be Laid Down in Law that a ukrainian who can be expected to provide his own accommodation must also do so. Accordance to the interest group, there is room for in the law.

Hardly Any New Shelters

Last week, The VNG Spoke of A “Very Critical Situation” in the Full Ukrainian Shelter. The Municipalities Set Up Reception Locations at A Rapid Pace After Russia Invaded Ukraine. But Recently Hardly Any New Places Have Become available, While Ukrainians Are Still Fleeing to the Netherlands.

The VNG also Pointed Out Several Times That Funding is Tight. After all, it is Difficult to arrange new reception locations if you do not know how long you can pay for them. The Ministry is working on a new way of finance, but accordance to the vng, this does not sacrifice a solution in the short term.

Parties in the house of representatives also repeatedly called for a long-term plan to provide sufficient and good shelter for ukrainians. The Ministry Says It is “Doing Everything it can to realize Sufficient Shelter Places for Ukrainians, But We Are Reaching the Limits”. It is Holding Talks with Municipalities “to Jointly Ensure Sufficient Reception Capacity”.

Currently, More than 97,000 Ukrainian Refugees Are Staying in Municipal Shelters. In Addition, there are Almost 30,000 Ukrainians who are in the Netherlands, but have arranged their own accommodation.
