Former and first female prime minister must get Nepal calm again

Former head judge Sushila Karki has been acting as Prime Minister of Nepal. Her predecessor Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli stepped up at the beginning of this week after major violent demonstrations in the country. The death toll has risen to 51.

The 73-year-old Karki was the first woman at the Supreme Court and is also the first female prime minister of Nepal. She has regularly pronounced transparency and independence within the judiciary, which is often under great political pressure.

The demonstrations are attributed to Gen Z, people born between 1997 and 2012. Karki joined the demonstrators earlier this week after at least nineteen demonstrators were killed. The protests broke out on Monday, a few days after the introduction of a ban on 26 different social media. Young people in particular took to the streets to express their displeasure about the measure and corruption. The armed forces took over control over the streets on Wednesday and set up a output ban. Normal life seems to be slowly resumed in Nepal, where 30 million people live. Fewer soldiers patrol, but some roads are still blocked.
