Forty-year-old Froome fell near the French town of Saint-Raphaël without a car or cyclist nearby. He was taken to the hospital in Toulon with a trauma helicopter. Froome lives in Monaco, just under 100 kilometers from the place of the accident.
According to Israel Prime Minister Tech, Froome has sustained a blow, five broken ribs and a vertebral fracture. For the latter, he must be operated on Thursday afternoon. His team emphasizes that he has not sustained main injuries.
Froome is not expected to take action this season. He may have already driven the last game in his career. His contract with Israel Prime Minister Tech is ending at the end of this year and his plans for the future are not yet clear.
For Froome it is the second heavy fall in his career. The Brit fell hard in 2019 in an exploration of a time trial in the Critérium du Dauphiné. After that, the Tour winner of 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017 never achieved his old level again. He no longer won a competition.
