It is the first time Ahold Delhaize has managed to make all its online activities profitable. The parent company of Albert Heijn, online store bol, and drugstore chain Etos sees a good future in the combination of physical and online stores.
European online sales of Ahold Delhaize rose by 12.7 percent in the second quarter. This was due to the strong growth of online store bol (12.5 percent) and supermarket chain Albert Heijn (over 10 percent).
The acquisition of the Romanian supermarket chain Profi earlier this year also contributed to the growth of sales. Ahold Delhaize gained seventeen hundred locations with it. The concern was already active in Romania with the Mega Image store chain.
The Dutch and Belgian supermarkets still suffered in the second quarter from the fact that they are no longer allowed to sell tobacco. In the United States, Ahold had actions to keep prices low, which put pressure on profitability.
The total turnover of the concern increased by 3.3 percent to over 23 billion euros.
