Go Ahead sharp on the counter

Bosz pointed out his players this week to the two defeats from last season. Go Ahead hurt PSV by winning 2-1 in Eindhoven in the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup and four days later winning 3-2 in De Adelaarshorst in the league.

“If you have a bit of feeling in your flikker, then you have revenge feelings,” Bosz said just before the match. That revenge did come, although PSV faced a deficit at halftime.

PSV made a good impression in the first half in attacking terms, but simply missed too many chances. Among others, Ryan Flamingo, Ismael Saibari and newcomer Alassane Pléa, who started in place of the not fully fit Ricardo Pepi, did not have their sights set correctly.

At Go Ahead, the sights were well adjusted. The Deventer team, with the new coach Melvin Boel (Paul Simonis has left for VfL Wolfsburg), mostly defended, but when they did come out, they were threatening. There was plenty of space behind the Eindhoven defense because PSV covered very far.

Dean James (shot wide) and Mathis Suray (ball on the crossbar) got chances and after 35 minutes it was even successful. James provided a tailored cross to Suray, who subtly let the ball slip from his foot: 0-1.

PSV still turns it around

So PSV had to chase after halftime. But Bosz’s team, which saw stylists Noa Lang and Malik Tillman leave this summer, lacked creativity to break Go Ahead. There were shots, but they often flew high.

Go Ahead remained easily upright and even got two nice opportunities on the counterattack via Victor Edvardsen and Jakob Breum.

The Deventer team smelled their second main prize of this calendar year, until the match completely turned around. After Nauber’s own goal, PSV pushed through and the 2-1 fell. Dest, who played well, volleyed the winning goal hard.

About 2,000 kilometers away, Luuk de Jong followed PSV’s victory on his phone. The striker, who kept the Eindhoven club in uncertainty for a long time about a longer stay, was presented at FC Porto of trainer Francesco Farioli during PSV-Go Ahead.

The post-De Jong era at PSV began with a victory, although it was anything but easy for Bosz’s team.
