Fulling second in Tour after bad descent gigante, final victory Ferrand-Prévot

Demi Vollering finished second in the Tour de France Femmes on Sunday. The Dutch rider benefited from a poor descent by Sarah Gigante in the final stage. Pauline Ferrand-Prévot grabbed the overall victory.

The 28-year-old Vollering rode away from Gigante with a group of favorites in the descent of the Col de Joux Plane, the second climb of the stage. The Australian had a lot of trouble descending and fell far behind.

Gigante failed to return to the group of favorites. As a result, Vollering climbed from third to second place in the general classification.

Ferrand-Prévot gave her overall victory shine by soloing to victory in the final stage. The leader of Visma-Lease a Bike made a double strike in the queen stage on Saturday, taking a 2.5-minute lead over Gigante and more than three minutes over Vollering.

In the standings, Vollering finished 3.42 minutes behind Ferrand-Prévot, who was the first French woman to win the Tour. Pole Katarzyna Niewiadoma completed the podium. Gigante lost almost four minutes and dropped to sixth place in the standings.

Ferrand-Prévot is making her debut in the Tour. She previously won Paris-Roubaix this year, her first road victory since 2015. The 33-year-old rider has since focused mainly on mountain biking.

The 124.1-kilometer final stage from Praz-sur-Arly to Châtel Les Portes du Soleil was colored by an attack from Anna van der Breggen. The Dutch rider rode away from a leading group 95 kilometers from the finish.

Van der Breggen rode alone for a long time, but was caught by the group of favorites 35 kilometers from the finish. Gigante had already been dropped from that group at that time.

The group of favorites stayed together for a long time, until Ferrand-Prévot attacked with 6 kilometers to go. The leader of Visma-Lease a Bike created a gap and did not give up her lead. She crowned her weekend with the second stage victory and the overall victory.

Vollering finished twenty seconds behind Ferrand-Prévot as second in the final stage. Niewiadoma crossed the finish line shortly behind the leader of FDJ-SUEZ as third.
