Luuk de Jong vervolgt zijn carrière bij FC Porto. De bij PSV vertrokken spits kwam zondag voor het oefenduel van FC Porto met Atlético Madrid verrassend het veld op bij de spelerspresentatie.
Terwijl zijn vorige club PSV nog op het veld stond voor de strijd om de Johan Cruijff Schaal, werd De Jong gepresenteerd bij FC Porto. Hij was daar de grote verrassing. De Jong werd met verschillende clubs in verband gebracht, maar FC Porto was niet eerder genoemd.
Bij FC Porto gaat de 34-jarige De Jong samenwerken met Francesco Farioli. De Italiaanse coach vertrok na het vorige seizoen bij Ajax. Over de toekomst van De Jong was lange tijd veel onduidelijkheid. Zijn contract bij PSV was op 30 juni afgelopen.
De Jong speelde de afgelopen drie seizoenen bij PSV, waar hij eerder al tussen 2014 en 2019 onder contract stond. Hij was aanvoerder en werd afgelopen seizoen voor de zesde keer in zijn carrière kampioen van Nederland. Vijf van die landstitels vierde hij met PSV.
PSV speelde afgelopen weken al in op een vertrek van De Jong. Zo ging zijn rugnummer naar Ricardo Pepi, haalde de club met Alassane Pléa een nieuwe spits en nam Jerdy Schouten de aanvoerdersband over.
Voor De Jong is FC Porto de vijfde club in het buitenland. Na zijn eerste periode bij PSV droeg hij het shirt van Sevilla en FC Barcelona. In de periode daarvoor speelde hij bij Borussia Mönchengladbach en Newcastle United.
De Jong begon zijn carrière bij De Graafschap en brak door bij FC Twente. Met die club vierde de 39-voudig international van Oranje in 2010 zijn eerste landstitel in Nederland.
Het is onbekend voor hoelang De Jong heeft getekend bij FC Porto, dat vorig seizoen derde werd in de Portugese competitie. De Jong zette in 2023 al een punt achter zijn interlandcarrière.
