FC Utrecht-Coach Ron Jans was full of praise over his team on Thursday after reaching the third preliminary round of the Europa League. Staff member Willem Janssen also received compliments after the 4-1 victory on Sheriff Tiraspol.
The Domstedelingen scored two of the four goals from a corner and seem to have a secret weapon in the house. “Before that, all credits go to Willem (Janssen, ed.),” Jans said afterwards at Ziggo Sport .
“He is concerned with standard situations. Together with the players, he is doing a lot with that. It does work. Players are going to believe in it more and more and then it is becoming more dangerous,” Jans continued.
Former FC Utrecht player Janssen has been part of the technical staff of the main force since 2023. Jans appointed the 39-year-old trainer together with former teammate Jacob Mulenga as the individual trainer of the players.
In total, Utrecht already scored four of the six goals from a corner this season. That is just as many as with the last 52 goals in all competitions in the 2024/2025 season. “And it could have been more today,” Jans admitted. “That first corner was also rehearsed, but unfortunately he didn’t get full.”
In the third preliminary round of the Europa League, FC Utrecht will compete against Servette FC. Next Thursday, the Domstedelingen will first visit the Swiss. A week later the return follows in the Galgenwaard.
