More than a hundred aid organizations are the alarm bell in Gaza because of famine. They not only do this because the Palestinians they want to help are in danger, but also because the organizations “see their own colleagues praise before their eyes”.
The 111 organizations urge to take action in a joint statement. They state that it is time to open all border crossings and to restore the influx of food, clean water, fuel and medical assistance.
According to the aid organizations, there is “tons” of food, water and medicines in warehouses just outside Gaza and in Gaza itself. But they would not have access to that. According to Israel, international aid organizations themselves do not do enough to raise help from distribution points.
“We have the capacity and the means to help on a large scale,” says the explanation of the organizations. “But because access is denied to us, we cannot reach those in need. Not even our own exhausted and starving teams.”
They say that their employees now also have to connect with food distribution points to get food. “With that they run the risk of being shot, just to feed their families. We see our own colleagues and partners praying before our eyes.”
Promises of improvement emergency aid ‘sound cave’
The declaration of the aid organizations comes two months after the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an initiative of Israel and the United States, started handing out emergency aid in Gaza.
There is a lot of criticism of the help of the GHF. For example, Palestinians can only go to a few points and they also have to walk for tens of kilometers to get there. At GHF points, according to the United Nations, Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli army since the end of May 766. At other auxiliary points, another 288 Palestinians died, which means that the total death toll is above a thousand.
The organizations are tapping governments of EU countries, among others, because improved emergency aid was promised. But those promises sound hollow, they write. “Palestinians are in a vicious circle of hope and sorrow, waiting for help and truce positions, and then waking up with deteriorated circumstances.”
They think it is time for governments to take decisive action and concrete measures are taken to end the war. On Monday, 28 countries, including the Netherlands, already called for that. “States must save lives before there are no more lives to save,” the organizations decide.
