Wiegman again with England to the European Championship final after late escape against Italy

Sarina Wiegman and England have once again qualified for the European Championship final on Tuesday. Thanks to a late goal in the semi-final in Geneva, the English women escaped elimination against Italy, after which they scored again in extra time (2-1).

England fell behind against Italy before half-time, after which elimination seemed near. In the sixth minute of extra time, substitute Michelle Agyemang saved the English team.

Subsequently, the match seemed to turn into a penalty shootout, until England were awarded a penalty deep in extra time. Chloe Kelly missed, but still scored on the rebound.

England thus booked a hard-fought victory and Wiegman is in the final of a European Championship or World Cup for the fifth time in a row. She led Orange to the European title in 2017 and lost to the United States in the World Cup final two years later. She also became European champion with England (2022), after which she had to settle for silver at the World Cup (2023).

England’s opponent in the final will be reigning world champion Spain or Germany. The two countries will face each other on Wednesday evening at 9:00 PM in Zurich. The European Championship final is on Sunday at 6:00 PM in Basel, when Wiegman can win the European title for the third time in a row.
