A 61-year-old man has died in the US state of New York after being pulled into an MRI scanner. Because such a device works with a very strong magnet, no metal objects are allowed in the same room. The victim was wearing a heavy necklace.
The incident took place on Wednesday at a clinic in Westbury, a village near New York City. According to local police, the man had entered the MRI room without permission. A scan was being performed there at that time.
During such a scan, a strong magnetic field is generated in the device. That is why metal or magnetic objects are prohibited in the same room. But the man was wearing “a heavy metal chain,” according to police. As a result, he was pulled into the scanner, according to The New York Times and NBC News.
The incident caused the man to have a seizure, after which he was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. He died there on Thursday afternoon.
