Tallon Griekspoor escaped elimination on Wednesday at the ATP tournament in Bastad, Sweden. The Dutchman survived five match points in his match against Italian Andrea Pellegrino. He will now face his compatriot Jesper de Jong.
The 29-year-old Griekspoor defeated the one year younger Pellegrino with 4-6, 7-6 (6) and 6-3. In the second set, the North Hollander saved five match points.
After losing the first set, Griekspoor fell behind 3-5 in the second set. In both the ninth and tenth games, the world number 29 survived a match point, after which he saved three more match points in the tiebreak.
In the third set, Griekspoor quickly took a break lead. He did not relinquish it and decided the match after two hours and fifteen minutes on his first match point.
Griekspoor faces De Jong in the quarterfinals, whom he has met once before. De Jong won that time. The world number 106 was previously too strong for Czech Vít Kopriva with 7-6 (3) and 7-5 earlier in the day.
Botic van de Zandschulp reached the second round in Bastad on Wednesday. He defeated Swedish wildcard holder Mikael Ymer with 6-4 and 6-1. The match had already started on Tuesday evening, but was interrupted by rain. In the second round, Van de Zandschulp plays against Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli.
