No more trains south of Rotterdam all day after malfunction in tunnel

The disruption of train traffic between Rotterdam and Breda and between Rotterdam and Dordrecht will last at least the entire Sunday evening. ProRail cannot yet say when the trains will run again. Train traffic has been disrupted since a power outage on Friday evening.

Power has now been restored in the Willemsspoortunnel in Rotterdam. But ProRail is still testing the systems in the tunnel. That will take at least the entire Sunday evening.

A ProRail spokesperson cannot say for sure when trains will run again from Rotterdam to Breda and Dordrecht. It is therefore not clear whether the disruption will be over by Monday morning during rush hour. “We are working with might and main to solve it,” the spokesperson tells NU.nl.

The disruption in the tunnel began Friday evening after a major power outage in the south of Rotterdam. ProRail must first be sure that all safety systems are working before the trains run again.

These safety systems also failed during the power outage. This includes gas and fire detectors, lighting of escape routes and communication systems.

Due to the disruption, international train traffic has been adjusted. The Eurostar to Paris and London is temporarily running via Utrecht and Den Bosch. The Eurocity and Eurocity Direct to Brussels run from Breda instead of Rotterdam. Travelers to Brussels must travel to Breda themselves. This is possible from Rotterdam via Utrecht Centraal and Den Bosch.

Anyone traveling from Rotterdam Centraal to Dordrecht must take the bus to Rotterdam Zuid station. Trains do run from there to Dordrecht.
