Vivianne Miedema is dolblij dat ze zaterdag tegen Wales haar honderdste doelpunt voor Nederland heeft gemaakt. De spits is ook opgelucht dat Oranje een goede start beleeft op het EK in Zwitserland.
“Honderd goals is heel speciaal”, zei Miedema na afloop van de 0-3-zege op Wales tegen de NOS. “Dit is iets waar je als klein meisje alleen maar van mag dromen. Het is heel onwerkelijk als je er dichtbij komt en het uiteindelijk haalt. Het is extra speciaal dat mijn honderdste goal op het EK is.”
Miedema maakte op slag van rust de openingstreffer door van afstand raak te schieten. De topscorer aller tijden van Oranje erkent dat ze in de eerste helft niet goed speelde. “Ik had wat tijd nodig. Maar in de tweede helft zie je weer de oude ‘Viv’ terug die we nodig hebben.”
De 28-jarige spits zag dat ook haar teamgenoten worstelden. “Het was gigantisch heet vandaag. De meiden hebben bij vlagen goed gevoetbald”, zei Miedema, die in aanloop naar het toernooi kampte met fysieke problemen. In de afgelopen jaren is ze vaak langdurig geblesseerd geweest.
“Dan komen er veel emoties los. Iedereen weet hoe zwaar de afgelopen 2,5 jaar zijn geweest. In april kreeg ik een hamstringblessure en vervolgens ook rugklachten. Het werd spannend of ik het EK zou halen. Ik had het WK van 2023 ook al gemist, dus ik ben blij dat ik hier kan staan.”
Vivianne Miedema is delighted to have scored her hundredth goal for the Netherlands against Wales on Saturday. The striker is also relieved that Oranje is off to a good start at the European Championship in Switzerland.
“A hundred goals is very special,” Miedema said after the 0-3 victory over Wales to the NOS. “This is something you can only dream of as a little girl. It is very unreal when you get close to it and finally achieve it. It is extra special that my hundredth goal is at the European Championship.”
Miedema scored the opening goal just before half-time by shooting from a distance. The all-time top scorer of Oranje acknowledges that she did not play well in the first half. “I needed some time. But in the second half you see the old ‘Viv’ back that we need.”
The 28-year-old striker also saw her teammates struggling. “It was extremely hot today. The girls played good football at times,” said Miedema, who struggled with physical problems in the run-up to the tournament. In recent years, she has often been injured for long periods of time.
“Then a lot of emotions are released. Everyone knows how difficult the past 2.5 years have been. In April I got a hamstring injury and then back problems. It became exciting whether I would make it to the European Championship. I had already missed the 2023 World Cup, so I’m glad I can be here.”
