Verstappen surprised with pole on Silverstone: ‘Nice boost for the team’

Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen surprised friend and foe on Saturday by grabbing pole position for the Grand Prix of Great Britain. The Dutchman sees his poler round on Silverstone as a nice boost for his team Red Bull Racing.

“It was pretty good today, but certainly not easy,” said Verstappen. “Due to the strong wind it was difficult to drive a consistent round. The car even moved on the straight. Fortunately it came together nicely in that last round.”

Verstappen managed to improve his time in his final round with four tenths. “I knew it was a fast round, but I would never have expected that I would win so much. The car was difficult to get in balance, but it worked just in time.”

For Verstappen, his pole is a nice boost, after the last few weeks had just been disappointing for him and Red Bull. “This job is great to drive on, but you really have to give everything to set a fast round,” Verstappen continued.

“We are quickly on the straight pieces, which makes it difficult in the fast turns. Yet it went well today. Tomorrow is waiting for a chance of rain, but this is at least a nice boost for the team. I am not in a title fight, so I can have fun tomorrow.”

Verstappen has the first row of World Cup leader Oscar Piastri. Lando Norris starts behind Verstappen as third, George Russell completes the second row in fourth place. The Grand Prix of Great Britain starts on Sunday at 4 p.m. (Dutch time).
