Elephant kicks two tourists on safari in Zambia

An elephant trampled two tourists to death on Thursday while they were on safari in Zambia, local police told BBC News.

The victims were two women, ages 68 and 67, from the United Kingdom and New Zealand. They were on a group safari in South Luangwa National Park, in the east of the Central African country.

The two tourists were walking through the park when the elephant charged at them at high speed. The guide leading the safari fired warning shots to scare the animal away, but to no avail. The elephant ran over the two women, who died at the scene.

According to BBC News, the animal was a female with young elephant calves. Nursing elephants are very protective of their calves and can become aggressive. Zambian authorities are warning tourists to be extremely careful.
