In supermarkets, empty Douwe Egberts shelves are again threatening. JDE Peet’s, the manufacturer of the famous coffee brand, no longer delivers his coffee due to a new conflict about the prices. CEO Michiel Muller of Onlininesupermarkt Picnic confirms this after reporting by De Telegraaf .
The newspaper reported that the European purchasing organization of Jumbo and Picnic will no longer receive Douwe Egberts from JDE. “We just order, but JDE does not want to deliver,” says Muller. He adds that the supermarkets order at the price that was agreed earlier this year.
But JDE recently decided to raise the prices again on 1 July. Coffee would therefore become up to 25 percent more expensive. Muller finds that price increase “unjustified”. If there is no more new stock, shelves in the supermarket can quickly empty. Muller does not know how long the current situation will last. “That is not to be said at the moment.”
Earlier this year, JDE was also in discussion with Dutch supermarkets about purchasing prices. As a result, fewer or no products from the manufacturer were available at Supers for weeks. Then the prices went up considerably. According to JDE, a new increase is inevitable, partly due to increased prices of coffee beans. But Muller states that the price of the beans to which JDE refers has recently fallen again.
JDE noted last week that Supers ultimately decides for themselves what the consumer pays in their store. “There we see that the private label coffee, moreover, is just as fast, sometimes even harder, rises in price. This shows that all coffee producers suffer from wider market trends.”
An Albert Heijn spokesperson could not immediately indicate whether the delivery stop also plays at that chain.
