Griekspoor conquers ATP title on grass on Mallorca just before Wimbledon

Tallon Griekspoor won his third ATP title on Saturday. The Dutch tennis player won the final in two sets against Frenchman Corentin Moutet in Mallorca: 7-5 and 7-6 (3) and is heading to Wimbledon with confidence.

The 28-year-old Griekspoor previously won the title on the hardcourt in Pune, India (2023) and on the grass of Rosmalen (2023). He won his second title on grass in Mallorca. Griekspoor also celebrated a successful return to the Spanish island after a abdominal muscle injury, which forced him to retire in the fourth round of Roland Garros.

With three ATP titles, Griekspoor only has five Dutch tennis players above him. Only Tom Okker (26), Richard Krajicek (17), Sjeng Schalken (9), Jan Siemerink (4) and Jacco Eltingh (4) have won a tournament victory more often at the highest level in men’s tennis.

Good news is also that Griekspoor is returning to the top 30 in the world rankings after eleven months. He rises from 34th to 29th position due to his final victory in Mallorca. Griekspoor’s highest position ever is 21st place in June 2023.

At Wimbledon, which starts on Monday, Griekspoor is seeded 31st. He will face American Jenson Brooksby (ATP-149) in the first round. Griekspoor’s best performance at Wimbledon is a place in the second round, in 2022 and 2024. Due to his seeded status and the form he showed in Mallorca, he has a good chance of surpassing that this year. Griekspoor did not lose a single set on the Spanish grass.

Griekspoor started as favorite

Griekspoor started Saturday in Mallorca as the favorite in the final against Moutet, who is 83rd in the world rankings. The Frenchman played his second ATP final and Griekspoor his fifth.

The North Hollander only had some trouble in the first set against Moutet on his own service in the fifth game, in which he had to work away a breakpoint. Moutet also won his service games quite convincingly for a long time. Only with a 6-5 lead did Griekspoor create his first breakpoints, after which he immediately struck with a beautiful return.

Moutet showed his frustration by breaking his racket after the first point of the second set. He quickly recovered and the second set then went reasonably evenly. Griekspoor missed two chances to break halfway through the set, after which he cleared three breakpoints himself in the next game.

Griekspoor was then the strongest in the tiebreak. He took the final victory on his first match point and is the winner of an ATP tournament again after two years.
