Due to colder wind no more chance of heat wave, but tropical temperatures

Although a colder westerly wind will blow in the Netherlands this coming weekend, we can still expect tropical temperatures in some places. Weerplaza also warns of a tropical night. A local heatwave, as previously predicted, is off the table.

Especially in the interior and the south, temperatures will rise sharply on Saturday. In many places it will be 30 degrees. In the south of the country it can even be 33 degrees locally. Only in the north is it cooler with a temperature between 27 and 29 degrees.

We speak of tropical temperatures when the mercury rises above 30 degrees. It is expected that this limit will be reached and even exceeded on Saturday. But according to Berend van Straaten from Weerplaza, it is still questionable whether that will also happen on Sunday. “Locally it can be 34 to 35 degrees, but in the west the temperatures will remain around 25 degrees.”

It will be cooler this coming weekend than initially predicted. The chance of a local heatwave in the south is therefore off the table. For a heatwave, five summer days warmer than 25 degrees are needed, three of which are warmer than 30 degrees.

Whether that heatwave would come depended mainly on the temperature on Monday. “But then we will be in a dip,” says Van Straaten. The temperature will then be between 19 and 25 degrees.

The fact that it is getting cooler than expected has to do with a colder westerly wind coming our way. “We are between the warm air of Southern Europe and the cooler air of Northwestern Europe. And the wind is blowing towards the west. That is happening earlier and faster than we expected.”

High chance of ‘sticky night’

Because the humidity is relatively low, it will not feel very stuffy, according to Van Straaten. “Certainly not compared to last week. But make no mistake: it will still be hot.”

That can also be seen in the night from Saturday to Sunday. Then the temperature will remain above 20 degrees in many places. This results in a tropical night. “A real sticky night then.”

A tropical night does not occur often in the Netherlands. Last week, for the first time in eight years, the temperature did not drop below 20 degrees at night.
