Vivianne Miedema has started the preparation for the European Championship, which starts in two weeks, ‘fit’. The top scorer of the Orange Lionesses has recovered from a hamstring injury she sustained more than two months ago.
“I’m doing okay. I was able to participate in everything during training today,” Miedema said after the first day of the European Championship preparation in Zeist. “I’m just fit. You never know what can happen, but at the moment I’m doing well.”
Things went wrong for Miedema in early April in the Nations League match of the Orange Lionesses against and in Austria. The 28-year-old from Drenthe started a race against the clock to reach the European Championship and is on track to play in the first group match.
The Orange Lionesses will play their first group match against Wales on Saturday, July 5. Miedema is expected to make her return next week when the Orange Lionesses play a farewell match against Finland in Leeuwarden. That match will be played next Thursday from 8:00 PM in the Cambuur Stadium.
Miedema also reported to the training field of Zeist three weeks ago for the Nations League matches against Germany (May 30) and Scotland (June 3). The goal was to make a substitute appearance against Scotland, but Miedema left the training camp before that match.
“It was a combination of things. We couldn’t win the Nations League anymore. If we hadn’t had a European Championship this summer, I probably would have taken the risk and played. Now it was wiser not to do it.”
