Philips is nog niet af van een claimzaak over prijsafspraken rond beeldbuizen. De Consumentenbond eist een schadevergoeding van het technologiebedrijf voor ruim 65.000 mensen. Die betaalden door het beeldbuizenkartel te veel voor hun televisie of monitor.
Dat heeft het gerechtshof in Den Bosch bepaald. De rechter gaat nu kijken of Philips consumenten moet compenseren die te veel betaalden voor hun televisie of computerscherm.
De Consumentenbond en Stichting Aequitas Belangenbehartiging hadden het hoger beroep aangespannen. Zij komen op voor ruim 65.000 gedupeerde consumenten die zich hebben aangemeld bij de Beeldbuisclaim.
Tussen 1996 en 2006 maakte Philips prijsafspraken met andere fabrikanten, zoals Samsung, LG en Panasonic. Daardoor waren de prijzen van tv’s en andere apparaten met beeldbuizen van de karteldeelnemers kunstmatig hoog.
Dit werkte zelfs door in de prijzen van toestellen met beeldbuizen van andere fabrikanten. In 2012 legde de Europese Commissie Philips en de andere fabrikanten hiervoor forse boetes op. Philips kreeg een boete van 509 miljoen euro.
“Het is heel goed dat die boetes zijn uitgedeeld. Maar gedupeerde consumenten zijn er niet mee geholpen, zegt directeur Sandra Molenaar van de Consumentenbond. “Philips zou de deelnemers van onze Beeldbuisclaim moeten compenseren en hierover wilden wij afspraken maken. Maar Philips weigert een fatsoenlijk aanbod te doen.”
Philips is not yet rid of a lawsuit regarding price-fixing concerning picture tubes. The Consumers’ Association is demanding compensation from the technology company for over 65,000 people. They paid too much for their television or monitor due to the picture tube cartel.
This has been determined by the court of appeals in Den Bosch. The judge will now consider whether Philips should compensate consumers who paid too much for their television or computer screen.
The Consumers’ Association and the Aequitas Belangenbehartiging Foundation had filed the appeal. They are representing more than 65,000 aggrieved consumers who have registered with the Picture Tube Claim.
Between 1996 and 2006, Philips made price agreements with other manufacturers, such as Samsung, LG, and Panasonic. As a result, the prices of TVs and other devices with picture tubes from the cartel participants were artificially high.
This even affected the prices of devices with picture tubes from other manufacturers. In 2012, the European Commission imposed hefty fines on Philips and the other manufacturers for this. Philips received a fine of 509 million euros.
“It is very good that those fines have been handed out. But affected consumers are not helped by it,” says director Sandra Molenaar of the Consumers’ Association. “Philips should compensate the participants of our Picture Tube Claim, and we wanted to make agreements about this. But Philips refuses to make a reasonable offer.”
