Suspect arrested after a fatal shooting at politician in Minnesota

The 57-year-old Vance Boelter was arrested on Sunday evening (local time) after a large manhunt in the American state of Minnesota. He is suspected of shooting and killing Democratic politician Melissa Hortman and her husband.

Boelter is also suspected of shooting Democratic Senator John Hoffman and his wife at their home in Minneapolis. They survived the attack.

Boelter was arrested near his farm near Green Isle, southwest of Minneapolis, according to ABC News. The sheriff of Ramsey County shared a photo on social media on Sunday showing the suspect being taken away in handcuffs.

Authorities previously found the shooter’s car, hat, and personal belongings. According to The New York Times, the man had a notebook with more than seventy potential targets, including politicians and business people.

The shooter committed the attacks on the night from Friday to Saturday (local time) in Brooklyn Park, a neighborhood in the north of Minneapolis. He posed as an officer, after which he fired at the politicians and their spouses.

After the shooting, a large-scale manhunt was launched. Governor Tim Walz spoke of a “politically motivated assassination attempt.”

Hoffman works as a senator in Minnesota and Hortman was a representative in that state.
