Israel carried out airstrikes on Iran last night. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz reports that the attacks targeted “military and nuclear targets.” Israel is now awaiting possible retaliation from Iran.

According to Katz, the airstrikes were carried out because Iran’s nuclear program poses an “essential threat to Israel.” Israel calls the attacks ‘preventive.’ Katz further states that Israel has declared a state of emergency, fearing “imminent” Iranian retaliatory attacks with rockets and drones.

According to two Reuters sources, the United States is not involved in the attacks and is not providing assistance.

On Friday morning (local time), explosions were heard northeast of Tehran, the capital of Iran, reports the Iranian state medium Nour News. Iranian air defenses are on high alert, state television reports.

Flights to and from Tehran have been suspended. There are no reports of damage or casualties yet.
