President Donald Trump is temporarily prohibited from deploying the National Guard and Marines in Los Angeles. A federal judge has ruled this. Trump had sent the National Guard to Los Angeles to suppress protests against the immigration policy.
In Los Angeles, demonstrations have been taking place for days against the arrests of immigrants in the city. On Saturday, Trump announced that he would send the National Guard to intervene. On Tuesday, he sent another two thousand members of the special unit. But he has to reverse that.
The National Guard is usually only deployed after the governors of a state request it from the government. According to Trump, the governor of California, Gavin Newsom, does not have the situation in Los Angeles under control. California started a lawsuit because the deployment of the National Guard had not happened in consultation.
A San Francisco-based district judge ruled in the verdict that the National Guard must again fall under the authority of Newsom and not under that of Trump. Furthermore, the judge stated that the unrest in Los Angeles is not a ‘rebellion’. Trump justified the deployment of the National Guard with that story.
From Friday 12 noon local time, the judge’s decision must take effect.
Newsom called Trump’s sending of the National Guard reckless and said earlier that the president’s action had actually caused unnecessary escalation. “Only about three hundred are being deployed. The rest are sitting unused in government buildings without instructions. This is not about public safety. It is about stroking the ego of a dangerous president,” the governor stated on X.
Newsom also spoke of a “disrespectful action towards our troops”. He says that the first two thousand guardsmen who were sent to Los Angeles did not receive food or water.
The demonstrations and riots in Los Angeles are the result of dissatisfaction with the actions of the American immigration service ICE. They have recently been fiercely hunting down all immigrants who reside in the US without the correct papers. That action angers many Americans.
