Bondscoach Ronald Koeman gaat enkele wijzigingen doorvoeren in de opstelling van Oranje voor de WK-kwalificatiewedstrijd van dinsdag tegen Malta. Maar het WK voor clubs is voor hem geen reden om spelers rust te geven.
“We gaan enkele wijzigingen doorvoeren. De elf die starten moeten negentig minuten fris zijn”, zei Koeman maandag tegen de NOS. Hij wilde niet zeggen welke wijzigingen dat zijn, ook niet op vragen op de persconferentie na het interview met de NOS.
“Ik maak de opstelling morgen pas bekend aan de spelers. Het lijkt me niet dat die in de krant moeten lezen of op tv moeten zien dat ze spelen.”
Koeman liet wel doorschemeren dat Mark Flekken net als zaterdag tegen Finland op doel staat. Aanvoerder Virgil van Dijk zal sowieso starten. Voor Flekken en Van Dijk wordt het duel met Malta hun laatste wedstrijd van het seizoen.
Met Nathan Aké en Tijjani Reijnders (transfer is nagenoeg rond) van Manchester City en Stefan de Vrij en Denzel Dumfries van Internazionale telt de Oranjeselectie vier spelers voor wie het seizoen nog lang niet klaar is. Zij beginnen volgende week aan het WK voor clubs in de Verenigde Staten.
Koeman liet al meermaals weten geen voorstander te zijn van het WK voor clubs. “Ik ga nu ook geen rekening houden met dat WK voor clubs”, zei hij op de persconferentie. “Ik vind dat Oranje nu belangrijker is. Nee, ik heb niet zoveel met dat WK.”
Ondertussen wil Koeman met Oranje op koers blijven voor het WK van volgend jaar in de VS, Canada en Mexico. Een zege op Malta is gewenst en dat mag geen probleem zijn. Het Zuid-Europese land is de nummer 169 van de FIFA-ranglijst.
“Maar Malta heeft best wat technische spelers”, zei Koeman. “Je moet ze goed onder druk zetten en geen tijd geven. Dan krijgen we kansen om het verschil te maken.”
Nederland-Malta begint dinsdag om 20.45 uur in de Groningse Euroborg en staat onder leiding van de Spaanse scheidsrechter Ricardo de Burgos.
National coach Ronald Koeman will make some changes to the Netherlands’ line-up for Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Malta. But the Club World Cup is not a reason for him to rest players.
“We are going to make some changes. The eleven who start must be fresh for ninety minutes,” Koeman told the NOS on Monday. He did not want to say what those changes were, not even in response to questions at the press conference after the interview with the NOS.
“I will only announce the line-up to the players tomorrow. I don’t think they should read in the newspaper or see on TV that they are playing.”
Koeman did hint that Mark Flekken, like on Saturday against Finland, will be in goal. Captain Virgil van Dijk will start anyway. For Flekken and Van Dijk, the match against Malta will be their last match of the season.
With Nathan Aké and Tijjani Reijnders (transfer is virtually complete) from Manchester City and Stefan de Vrij and Denzel Dumfries from Internazionale, the Netherlands squad has four players for whom the season is far from over. They will start next week at the Club World Cup in the United States.
Koeman has repeatedly stated that he is not a fan of the Club World Cup. “I am not going to take that Club World Cup into account now,” he said at the press conference. “I think the Netherlands is more important now. No, I don’t have much to do with that World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Koeman wants to keep the Netherlands on course for next year’s World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico. A victory over Malta is desired and that should not be a problem. The Southern European country is number 169 in the FIFA ranking.
“But Malta has some technical players,” Koeman said. “You have to put them under pressure and not give them time. Then we get opportunities to make the difference.”
Netherlands-Malta starts on Tuesday at 8:45 PM in the Euroborg in Groningen and is under the direction of Spanish referee Ricardo de Burgos.
