The Dutch-Hungarian choreographer Krisztina de Châtel died on Tuesday in her home in Amsterdam, announced her family to the ANP . The Châtel had been sick for some time. She turned 81.
The Châtel was born in Budapest and moved to Amsterdam in the late 1960s. In 1976 she founded her own dance group, with which she performed up to and including 2008. Then she worked with various other companies. Her work, in which she brought together dance, music and visual arts, was praised internationally. Her best -known choreographies are Typhoon (1986), Thron (1984) and Föld (2022).
She received many awards, such as the Amsterdamprijs for the Art and the Frans Banninck Cocqpenning for her special culture merits.
She also won the Golden Zwaan, an important oeuvre prize for dancers. The jury stated in 2010 that the Châtel “has enriched the Dutch dance landscape on many fronts and that its contribution is invaluable for the development of modern dance”.
De Châtel was also appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. She also founded the Imperium Foundation, with which she supported young and quirky dance artists. The foundation will continue this work and aims to keep the oeuvre of the Châtel visible.
The family and its foundation are organizing a public memorial meeting in ITA in Amsterdam on Friday at 11 am. This commemoration is for “everyone accessible”.
