Airlines from Suriname and Tanzania will no longer be allowed to fly in the European Union starting Tuesday. According to the European Commission, they do not meet international safety standards.
“Serious safety problems have been identified during assessments by aviation safety experts,” the Commission writes. International safety standards are not being followed. For example, there is not enough oversight of flights, or there is too little qualified personnel.
These are airlines registered in Suriname and Tanzania. With this addition, a total of 169 companies are not allowed to fly in the EU. 22 of these are Russian companies.
The measure does not directly affect air traffic from Schiphol, says a spokesperson for the airport to the press agency ANP. There are no companies from Tanzania active there. “Surinam Airways is the only Surinamese airline,” says the spokesperson. “However, they only use European-certified aircraft here.”
