Lee defeats successor to deposed Yoon in South Korean presidential election

The progressive politician Lee Jae-Myung has won the presidential election in South Korea. This is apparent from a joint exit poll from South Korean media. The elections followed the deposition of conservative President Yoon Suk-Yeol.

Lee is a member of the Democratic Party (DP). That is the most important opposition party and the largest party in the South Korean parliament.

According to the ExitPoll, he managed to win almost 52 percent of the votes. He faced the conservative candidate Kim Moon-Sooo, who tried to keep the presidency as the successor to Yoon for the right-wing people’s forces (PPP). Kim has won 39.3 percent of the votes. Reuters news agency reports that around 78 percent of the more than 44 million voters voted.

Lee already made a shot at the presidency in 2022, but then narrowly lost to Yoon.

According to the DP, the South Koreans have made a “fiery statement against the regime that revolted”.
