Two dead in France after CL-win PSG, more than 500 arrests

Two people in France died on Saturday night to Sunday while celebrating Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory. Police report that nearly two hundred people have been injured across the country.

A twenty-year-old woman died in Paris. She was riding her scooter when she was hit by a vehicle with celebrating supporters. The other dead person is a seventeen-year-old boy. He was stabbed to death during the celebration in Dax, in the south of France.

In total, 192 people were injured and 559 arrests were made, reports the French Ministry of the Interior. 491 arrests took place in Paris, where the celebration got out of hand in some places. 320 people are still in custody, 254 of whom are in Paris.

Various videos show people in the French capital clashing with the police and throwing fireworks at the officers. Vandalism of shops, windows, cars and street lighting was also reported. Twelve officers were injured. Yet the police said that the celebration went “largely satisfactorily”.

There were also incidents in other French cities surrounding the celebration of Paris Saint-Germain’s victory. In Grenoble, four people were injured in a car collision. According to Le Parisien, these are four family members.

Paris Saint-Germain won the Champions League for the first time in club history on Saturday evening. In the final, Internazionale was defeated 5-0.
