Parts of Limburg were hit by severe thunderstorms on Saturday evening, causing flooding. There were also large hailstones. In Venlo, specimens with a diameter of up to six centimeters were observed, according to Weerplaza.
The KNMI had issued a code yellow warning for thunderstorms with heavy rain, gusts of wind and large hailstones in the east of North Brabant and in Limburg. Limburg was the first to be hit on Saturday evening, with heavy showers and a lot of thunder.
Large hailstones fell in the region around Venlo, among other places. A meteorologist from Weerplaza, who was on site, saw specimens with a diameter of six centimeters. Some car windows were broken by the hail. However, these were very local hailstorms.
A reader of NU.nl from Central Limburg also reports “hailstones the size of golf balls and walnuts”, just south of Venlo. There was also “quite a bit of damage to cars” there.
Later this evening, the thunderstorms will move to North Brabant, and showers may also develop in Gelderland. “That will continue for the next few hours, and partly also into the night,” says Donny de Koning from Weerplaza. “Especially the east of the country will continue to deal with this, possibly later also Overijssel.”
