A British ex-marine has been charged with reckless driving and intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm, among other charges, after driving into a crowd in Liverpool on Monday. 50 of the 79 injured had to be hospitalized for treatment.
The 53-year-old Briton is suspected of deliberately driving into a group of revelers in the center of the English city. This happened at the end of the massive tribute to Liverpool FC. Seven injured are still in the hospital. Their condition is stable.
The cause of the collision is not yet known. The police do not suspect terrorism and believe that the suspect acted alone.
According to the public prosecutor, the investigation is still in its early stages. Police report that there is a large amount of footage of the incident. This includes footage from security cameras, businesses, citizens’ smartphones, and body and dashcams from officers.
Tens of thousands of supporters were in the center of Liverpool on Monday to celebrate the club’s league title. The players, including the Dutch players Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, drove through the streets of Liverpool in an open bus for the tribute. The team is coached by Arne Slot.
