Titelverdedigster Iga Swiatek heeft woensdag overtuigend de derde ronde van Roland Garros bereikt. De Poolse won eenvoudig in twee sets van voormalig US Open-winnares Emma Raducanu: 6-1 en 6-2.
Swiatek jaagt op haar vierde Roland Garros-titel op rij en haar vijfde in totaal. De Poolse speelt in de derde ronde tegen de winnares van de partij tussen de Tsjechische Sara Bejlek (WTA-188) en de Roemeense Jaqueline Cristian (WTA-60).
Op papier mag dat geen probleem zijn voor de 23-jarige Swiatek. Ze verloor slechts drie games in haar tweederondepartij tegen de 22-jarige Raducanu, die 41e staat op de wereldranglijst. De Britse won in 2021 de US Open, maar zakte daarna ver terug. Op Roland Garros kwam ze nooit verder dan de tweede ronde en dat blijft dus zo.
Hoewel Swiatek de afgelopen drie edities won in Parijs, wordt ze dit jaar niet gezien als de grote favoriete voor de eindzege. Swiatek kende een terugval na een positieve dopingtest vorig jaar. Ze werd een maand geschorst nadat het verboden middel trimetazidine in haar lichaam was gevonden.
Op dit moment staat Swiatek vijfde op de WTA-ranglijst, nadat ze lange tijd de nummer één was geweest. De Belarussische Aryna Sabalenka voert nu de wereldranglijst aan.
Paolini veel te sterk voor Tomljanovic
Eerder op de dag bereikte Jasmine Paolini de tweede ronde van Roland Garros. De 29-jarige Italiaanse won afgetekend van de Australische Ajla Tomljanovic.
De als vierde geplaatste Paolini had op Court Philippe-Chatrier aan twee sets voldoende: 6-3 en 6-3. Ze speelt in de derde ronde tegen Yuliia Starodubtseva, die in twee sets te sterk was voor Anastasia Potapova: 7-6 (4) en 6-2. Vorig jaar haalde Paolini de finale van Roland Garros, waarin Swiatek veel te sterk was (6-1 en 6-2).
Er zijn geen Nederlandse vrouwen meer actief in het enkelspel van Roland Garros. Debutante Suzan Lamens verloor dinsdag in de eerste ronde en Arantxa Rus ging woensdag in de tweede ronde onderuit tegen de Deense Clara Tauson (7-6 (2) en 7-5).

Swiatek is chasing her fourth consecutive Roland Garros title and her fifth in total. The Polish player will play in the third round against the winner of the match between Czech Sara Bejlek (WTA-188) and Romanian Jaqueline Cristian (WTA-60).
On paper, that shouldn’t be a problem for the 23-year-old Swiatek. She only lost three games in her second-round match against the 22-year-old Raducanu, who is 41st in the world rankings. The British player won the US Open in 2021 but then dropped far back. She never got past the second round at Roland Garros, and that remains the case.
Although Swiatek has won the past three editions in Paris, she is not seen as the big favorite for the final victory this year. Swiatek experienced a setback after a positive doping test last year. She was suspended for a month after the prohibited substance trimetazidine was found in her body.
Currently, Swiatek is fifth in the WTA rankings, after being number one for a long time. Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka now leads the world rankings.
Paolini far too strong for Tomljanovic
Earlier in the day, Jasmine Paolini reached the second round of Roland Garros. The 29-year-old Italian player won decisively against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic.
