Ascension weekend starts early with great crowds on Dutch roads

The Wednesday evening rush hour started early. Due to Ascension Day, many people are going away for a long weekend. There are currently more than 850 kilometers of traffic jams.

“It’s already quite busy,” says a spokesperson for the ANWB. “We are seeing a lot of congestion especially in the center and south of the country.”

Especially around Utrecht and towards the south there are traffic jams. For example, on the A2 to Zaltbommel you can expect at least half an hour of delay.

“There are also traffic jams in many places at the border with Germany,” says the spokesperson. Traffic there must take into account at least twenty minutes of delay. It is also busy near Nijmegen. On the N325 there are traffic jams “with at least half an hour of extra travel time”.

The traffic jams are starting early because many people have planned a weekend away because of Ascension Day. The crowds will therefore increase further. In previous years, there were at least 1,000 kilometers of traffic jams on the road during Ascension Day.

It was also busy on the road on Tuesday. At its peak, there were more than 1,100 kilometers of traffic jams.
