The Netherlands had more than a million plug-in cars for the first time at the end of the first quarter. More than one in ten passenger cars is now a plug-in car. And the number of gasoline cars is decreasing.
At the end of the first quarter, there were 594,000 fully electric cars and 410,000 hybrid cars with a plug, reports statistics office CBS. This means that there are now more than a million plug-in cars for the first time, as can be seen in the table below.
“Remarkable, that advance of electric driving. Especially among private individuals,” says a CBS spokesperson. Private electric drivers are now in the majority. Previously, these were business drivers. A possible reason for the advance is that there are more affordable second-hand models. Relatively speaking, business owners drive much more with plug-in cars: 39 percent are electric, compared to 6 percent for private individuals.
There are also major shifts within the electric driving market. It was announced on Tuesday that the number of Tesla sales in the EU halved last month.
On April 1, there were 9.3 million passenger cars in the Netherlands. Three-quarters of them still run on gasoline, but that number decreased by 1.3 percent in 2024. According to the CBS spokesperson, the decrease in the number of gasoline cars “may well be a trend”.
