Switzerland held out against the USA for a long time. The Americans took 39 shots, but goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni kept a clean sheet for a long time. In extra time, Tage Thompson still made the winning goal.
It is only the third world title in ice hockey for the USA. The first title dates back to 1933. The final victory at the 1960 Olympic Games is also counted as a world title. In that year, no World Championship was held.
