280 million euros on weather damage in 2024, much less than the years before

The total damage caused by extreme weather in the Netherlands amounted to 280 million euros in 2024. That is considerably less than in previous years. In 2023, the damage was 414 million euros, and in 2022 it was as high as 955 million euros.

Of that 280 million euros, insurers paid out approximately 100 million euros for precipitation damage to homes and cars. This is according to the Climate Damage Monitor of the Association of Insurers. This damage occurs in cars, for example, because water enters through doors, windows, or an exhaust. This can damage electronics, engine parts, or upholstery.

The damage amount due to precipitation was much higher in 2023. Then it was about 132 million euros. In 2022, it was considerably lower at almost 73 million euros.

The total amount of weather damage has decreased significantly in 2024 compared to previous years. According to the association, this is because the weather was relatively calm last year. There was less storm damage and no severe hailstorms.

You can see the total weather damage of the past years in the image below. A clear peak can be seen in the year 2022. At that time, the Netherlands experienced many storms: Corrie, Dudley, Eunice, and Franklin. Storm Eunice was the most severe and caused a lot of damage. Four people died then due to fallen trees.
