Wimbledon asks tennis fans to avoid 'the queue' on the hottest opening day ever

The organization of Wimbledon has asked people who want to obtain a ticket via ‘The Queue’ to stay home on Monday. It is the warmest opening day of the Grand Slam tournament in London ever.

It is up to 34 degrees Celsius in London on Monday. The previous heat record was 29.3 degrees.

It is customary for there to be a queue of spectators trying to obtain an admission ticket for Wimbledon, the so-called ‘The Queue’. Spectators wait just outside the gates for hours for their turn.

Despite the heat, the public came to the tennis tournament in large numbers on Monday. The spectators in the park who have not yet found a place in the stands often seek cooling in the shade.

The heat protocol for singles comes into effect at a minimum of 30.1 degrees. In that case, the players may take a ten-minute break between the second and third sets (best-of-three, for women) or between the third and fourth sets (best-of-five, for men).

The temperature is measured half an hour before the start of the matches. Tallon Griekspoor and Botic van de Zandschulp will be in action later on Monday afternoon.
