Willem II player Samuel Bamba heard monkey sounds on Saturday evening with his debut in the Kitchen Champion Division match visiting SC Cambuur (2-2). The German is disappointed and thanks a colleague from the opponent for the support.
The racist incident in Leeuwarden happened fifteen minutes before the end of the game. The 21-year-old Bamba heard a few Cambuur fans make monkey sounds in the cage stadium when he was taken to the side.
“I am disappointed and angry that after my very first game for Willem II I have to talk about something like that,” Bamba wrote on Instagram afterwards. “Maybe you shouldn’t go to a stadium, but to a zoo if you want to talk to ‘monkeys’.”
The Bamba rented from VfL Bochum received support from Cambuur striker and countryman Tony Rölke after the game. The two walked together to the profession from which the sounds had been heard.
“I want to thank my friend Tony and I sincerely hope that this will not happen to other players,” Bamba continued. “We are going to the stadiums to have fun, whether you are a player or supporter. I am a person like everyone else.”
