Daisy Gesink, the wife of former cyclist Robert Gesink, has passed away. Gesink announced this on Saturday via Instagram.
“You will live on forever in our hearts,” writes the 39-year-old Gesink, who ended his cycling career last year. “Thank you for all the love you have given us. It breaks my heart that we have to continue without you. But above all, I am proud to be your husband.”
Robert and Daisy Gesink have a son and a daughter together: Anne and Bram. The cause of Daisy Gesink’s death is unknown.
The death is causing a lot of emotion in the cycling world. Wout van Aert, Tim Merlier, Bram Tankink, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot and many others are sending Gesink their support via social media.
For Visma-Lease a Bike, the team that Gesink served throughout his career, the sad news is the final chapter of a day of extremes. Earlier on Saturday, there was euphoria at the Dutch team during the Giro d’Italia. Leader Simon Yates conquered the pink leader’s jersey in the penultimate stage.
