Sarina Wiegman is supertrots na het prolongeren van de Europese titel met Engeland. De bondscoach blikt terug op een “chaotisch” toernooi. “Het is ongelooflijk dat we onze eerste wedstrijd verliezen en vervolgens Europees kampioen worden.”
Engeland won zondag na een knappe comeback de EK-finale van Spanje. De ploeg van Wiegman kwam in de eerste helft nog op achterstand, maar dwong met een gelijkmaker in de tweede helft een verlenging af. Door een succesvolle penaltyserie gaat de EK-trofee net als in 2022 naar Engeland.
“Ik kan het niet geloven. We hebben gezegd dat we op welke manier dan ook kunnen winnen. Dat is wat we vandaag opnieuw hebben laten zien. Ik ben zo trots op het team en de staf. Het is ongelooflijk”, zei Wiegman tegen BBC One.
De ploeg van Wiegman toonde zich eerder in de knock-outfase ook al veerkrachtig. Zowel tegen Zweden (kwartfinale) als Italië (halve finale) won Engeland nadat het op achterstand was gekomen. Over de gehele knock-outfase heeft Engeland zelfs maar vier minuten een voorsprong gehad.
“We hebben we knotsgekke wedstrijden gespeeld”, zei Wiegman tegen de NOS. “Tegen Zweden en Italië en dan vanavond ook weer. Er zat zoveel passie, strijd en geloof in. Dit zegt alles over het team. Ook al kwamen we achter, we hadden het vertrouwen dat we wel weer een goal zouden maken.”
‘Vanaf de eerste wedstrijd was het chaos’
Engeland had een lastige start van het toernooi. De titelverdediger verloor de eerste groepswedstrijd van Frankrijk (2-1), maar herpakte zich met zeges op Nederland (4-0) en Wales (6-1).
“De eerste wedstrijd was een teleurstelling, maar bracht ook enorme urgentie in het team. Dat heeft het team zo bij elkaar gebracht. Hoewel het daarvoor ook al goed zat vond ik, maar dat gaf nog wat extra’s.”

Het is voor Wiegman de derde Europese titel op rij. Ze won het EK voor het eerst in 2017 met Oranje en greep vijf jaar later de titel met Engeland. “Het kan niet waar zijn, je wint gewoon drie keer achter elkaar. Het moet nog even indalen.”
Wiegman gaat Veurink missen
Wiegman moet het na dit EK wel stellen zonder haar assistent Arjan Veurink. Na 8,5 jaar samenwerking gaat hij aan de slag als bondscoach van de Oranjevrouwen. Samen werden ze met Oranje en Engeland drie keer Europees kampioen en reikten ze twee keer tot de WK-finale.
“Ik ga hem natuurlijk enorm missen. Het is een heel, heel bijzondere samenwerking, die ik de rest van mijn leven zal koesteren. Ik denk hij ook.”
“Ik denk dat we heel complementair zijn geweest, dus dat gaan we nog wel even vieren. Ik denk dat er nog wel een traantje komt en dan gaan we ook weer door, want ik vind het ook fantastisch dat hij een nieuwe stap gaat maken. Dat hij Oranje gaat coachen is natuurlijk geweldig.”

England won the European Championship final against Spain on Sunday after a clever comeback. Wiegman’s team fell behind in the first half, but forced an extension with an equalizer in the second half. Thanks to a successful penalty series, the European Championship trophy, just like in 2022, goes to England.
“I can’t believe it. We said we can win in any way. That’s what we showed again today. I’m so proud of the team and the staff. It’s unbelievable,” Wiegman told BBC One.
Wiegman’s team had previously shown resilience in the knockout phase. England won against both Sweden (quarter-final) and Italy (semi-final) after falling behind. England has even had a lead for only four minutes during the entire knockout phase.
“We played crazy matches,” Wiegman told the NOS. “Against Sweden and Italy and then again tonight. There was so much passion, fight and faith in it. This says everything about the team. Even though we fell behind, we were confident that we would score another goal.”
‘It was chaos from the first match’
England had a difficult start to the tournament. The defending champion lost the first group match against France (2-1), but recovered with victories over the Netherlands (4-0) and Wales (6-1).
“The first match was a disappointment, but also brought enormous urgency to the team. That brought the team together so much. Although I thought it was already good before that, it gave something extra.”
“It was chaos from the first match. Losing your first match and then becoming European champion is unbelievable. It was an incredibly chaotic tournament.”
It is Wiegman’s third European title in a row. She won the European Championship for the first time in 2017 with Orange and five years later won the title with England. “It can’t be true, you just win three times in a row. It still has to sink in.”
Wiegman will miss Veurink
After this European Championship, Wiegman will have to do without her assistant Arjan Veurink. After 8.5 years of collaboration, he will start as head coach of the Orange Women. Together they became European champions three times with Orange and England and reached the World Cup final twice.
“I am of course going to miss him enormously. It is a very, very special collaboration, which I will cherish for the rest of my life. I think he will too.”
“I think we have been very complementary, so we are going to celebrate that for a while. I think there will still be a tear and then we will continue, because I also think it is fantastic that he is going to take a new step. That he is going to coach Orange is of course great.”
