Lorena Wiebes won the first edition of the Copenhagen Sprint on Saturday. The Dutch rider from Team SD Worx-Protime stayed ahead of, among others, compatriot Charlotte Kool.
In the first edition of the Copenhagen Sprint, the peloton raced over 151 flat kilometers from Roskilde to Copenhagen. As the name suggested, the race ended in a sprint.
Wiebes was the overwhelming favorite in advance and gave the competition no chance. Elisa Balsamo crossed the line in second place. Chiara Consonni completed the podium.
Kool did not get further than fourth place. The rider from Team Picnic PostNL is still waiting for her first victory of the year. Her last victory dates back to August 13, 2024, when she won the second stage of the Tour de France.
It is Wiebes’ eleventh victory of the year. The European champion can therefore head to the Giro d’Italia, which starts on July 6, with a good feeling. Wiebes also has the Tour de France on her program. The French stage race starts on July 26.
On Sunday, the men’s peloton will also ride the Copenhagen Sprint for the first time. The riders face a 235.6 kilometer long course between Roskilde and Copenhagen. Olav Kooij and Dylan Groenewegen are among the Dutch contenders.
