Tim Wellens had ample time on Sunday to think about how he would celebrate his ride victory in the Tour de France. But at the moment suprême he didn’t think about it anymore. Kopman Tadej Pogacar did not enjoy it any less.
The 34-year-old Wellens stripped himself in the fifteenth stage of his fellow refugees and soloed to an impressive victory. The Belgian helper of Tadej Pogacar had a one and a half minute aid for number two Victor Campenaerts at the finish in Carcassonne.
“I had the time to think of something and just wanted to put my bike in the air,” said Wellens after his victory. “But I was so happy that I didn’t think about it anymore.”
With his victory, Wellens completed a trilogy of stage victories in large rounds. He already won two stages in the Giro d’Italia (2016 and 2018) and two in the Vuelta a España (2020). There is now a nice victory in the Tour de France.
“It’s very special,” Wellens continued. “Everyone knows the tour, everyone wants to ride there, but not many people also win a ride. But I would exchange this victory for the yellow of Tadej in Paris.”

‘One of the best teammates I’ve ever had’
Pogacar enjoyed the success of his teammate. “I am more than happy for him,” said the Slovenian gingerbread bearer. “Tim deserves this. He is one of the best teammates I’ve ever had.”
