Max Verstappen, George Russell

Max Verstappen finished second in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix on Saturday, with George Russell taking pole position at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. View the starting grid here.

Russell, who took his sixth career pole, was more than a tenth ahead of Verstappen. World Championship leader Oscar Piastri finished third, and Russell’s teammate Kimi Antonelli finished fourth.

Verstappen is on edge for the race in Montreal. The Dutchman received three penalty points on his license two weeks ago after the Spanish Grand Prix following a collision with Russell. This brought his total to eleven, while a suspension follows at twelve penalty points.

Verstappen starts the race with a 49-point deficit to Piastri. Lando Norris, who is second in the World Championship standings, had a disappointing qualifying session and will start seventh. The Canadian Grand Prix starts at 8:00 PM (Dutch time).
