The number of injured in the stabbing on a platform at Hamburg’s central station has risen to 18, German police report. The suspect in the knife attack will appear before the magistrate on Saturday.
The knife attack took place just after 6:00 PM on a platform near a waiting train, broadcaster NDR reports. The woman allegedly stabbed people at random. Of the 18 injured, four are in life-threatening condition. Train traffic at the important station was temporarily suspended.
According to Bild, it is a German woman who is known to the police. She is said to be mentally ill and spent some time in a psychiatric institution.
Police report on X that the investigation into the suspect’s motive is still ongoing. A spokesperson says on X that the woman’s state of mind at the time of the attack is part of that investigation.
Police further state that they assume the woman acted alone and that she was not politically motivated.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz thanks the emergency services on X for their efforts. He speaks of a “shocking” incident. He has pledged federal support to the mayor of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher.
Tschentscher also speaks of a shocking act on X. He hopes the victims recover quickly. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt condemns the incident. Speaking to journalists, he described the attack as a “cowardly act.”
