
Michael van Gerwen is overjoyed with his final victory of the World Series Finals in Amsterdam. The Dutch darter does not think it will take another two years before he wins a big tournament again.
Van Gerwen won a major tournament for the last time in 2023. Since then he has been struggling with injuries and a moderate shape and separated from his wife. He was still in the World Cup final this year, in which he lost to Luke Littler.
“This feels fantastic,” Van Gerwen said on a press conference on Sunday after his 11-7 victory on Littler in AFAS Live. “I had to work hard for this title. But the audience gave me so much energy and pleasure.”
The 36-year-old Van Gerwen successively defeated Wessel Nijman, Rob Cross, Luke Humphries, Josh Rock and Littler. “If I am nice to throw like this weekend, I can also enjoy it,” continued ‘Mighty Mike’.
“For a darter of my status it is actually too long since I won a big tournament. It will not be another two years before I win a television tournament again. If that will happen, I will stop darts.”
Van Gerwen is proud that he had defeated Humphries, Rock and Littler on the same day. De Brabander is the first darter to win from both Humphries and Littler on the way to a big title at the PDC.
“I am the first? I will also be the second and the third,” said Van Gerwen, who celebrated his victory with his daughter on stage. “Whether I am back? I never got away.”
Van Gerwen won the World Series Finals in Amsterdam for the sixth time. The triple world champion is now on 48 major titles.
